The City of Hobart utilises the workshop forum as allowed under Local Government (Meeting Procedures) Regulation 2015 as a mechanism to receive information in relation to specific matters.
In accordance with the Terms of Reference of the Committee, any matter that is listed on the agenda for workshopping may not be subject to a Committee decision, other than a resolutions that the item be noted.
The Manager City Compliance and the Director Strategic and Regulatory Services Network gave a presentation on the Dog Management Policy Review. It was noted that the next steps were: to seek endorsement at a Council Meeting to give public notice; and invite submissions from the public on the draft policy and declared areas. The decision was scheduled for May 2025 Council Meeting. Elected members discussed the adequacy of biodiversity assessments undertaken, considered the opposing views of both the South Hobart Soccer Club and the dog walking community and explored some options that may be agreeable to both parties. There was consensus that more work was needed on the policy and that the Council will consider the reviewed policy at a later meeting (possibly August 2025). Community input in relation to this item was heard from: Sara Callaghan (Community Member), Tanzi Lewis (President, Hobart Dog Walking Association Inc), Dr Jennifer Conner (South Hobart Dog Owners), Rhys Edwards (South Hobart Football Club), Ed Swan (South Hobart Football Club), David Day (South Hobart Progress Association) and Richard Gould (Community Representative).
